GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE GREAT DEPRESSION BY DEREK W. AND PARKS C.

The Great Depression was one of the most tragic and dreadful times ever recorded in human history. With the mass murders, rail riding, hobos, and stock market crashes, the Great Depression was definetly as bad as it sounds.

One of the reasons why the stock failed it is because of the shocking Wall Street Market crash, which is the biggest crash in the entire whole history in the United States. The market fell

over 20% within the 28th and the 29th of October, 1929. It fell because during the 20's the stocks quadrupeledin value, which made the investors, well, invest very heavily in stock. Then the bubble bursted in 1929 with a natural crash and by the early thirties, the values dropped around 80%.

During the great depression money loss wasn’t the only problem. There were a ton of criminals to worry about like Al Capone, Baby Face Nelson, George Machine gun Kelly, and Pretty Boy Floyd. They would rob banks, kidnap, and even murder anyone who got in the way of them or their gang. An example of this is the Kansas City massacre which was a mass murder in a railroad that took the lives of 4 policemen. Does it seem kind of extreme to you, well it is true? That is how bad it was during the great depression.

The Dust Bowl is another great example of the depression. The Dust Bowl is an area in the middle of the United States with a lot of dust storms, resulting in farming failure. A lot of banks also closed during the Great Depression, causing some unemployment and when people had to take their money out of the bank, meaning they'd receive no interest. Also doing the simplest things in the Dust Bowl area such as taking a walk, going to school, or even planting crops were very difficult at the times due to all of the dust. For instance, kids had to wear "dust

masks" just to breath to get to school. Dust masks are outlandish-looking masks that have a cone-like filter.

In the thirties, times were rough with the Great Depression going on and all. But there's one factor that was dangerous resulting in possibly deadly consequences. There were more than 2 million male hobos and about 8000 female hobos riding the rails was one of the ways the Great Depression was formed. It’s the main way of transportation for these peniless people. These were the rail riders. They started in the Civil War, hopping these trains. But they got real famous around the thirties. Rail riders are hopeless and peniless hobos and kids who have no choice but to illegally jump onto a train for needs to find a job. But there are people that try to prevent these poor people from getting on these trains with no tickets rail bulls. Rail bull are basically somber guards hired by the railroad companies,

only letting ticketed passengers on. Every year in the Great Depression, more than 8,500 hobos were killed annually either by the rail road bulls or accidents. Also the American Hobo wrote letters to family or friends. We also figured out that hobos were a kind of”. When the market chrashes, the amount of hobos increases.

Now, you know the historical importance and devastation the Depression brought with it.
